Hoofbeat Ridge Camps

Girl Scouts Horseback Rider’s Badge Weekends

(Grades 3 and up)

The Program:

This program will include 3 horseback riding sessions and 5 unmounted instruction sessions. Activities will include riding lessons, trail rides (weather permitting), and mounted games. It also includes care and use of tack, safety in approaching a horse, training techniques, furrier work, breeds and their uses, saddling and bridling a horse, and other horse-related topics and activities.

The program begins with registration between 7:00-7:30 p.m. Friday evening and will end after lunch on Sunday at approximately 1:00 p.m. For the safety and welfare of our horses and riders, we have a maximum weight limit of 200 pounds for riders. Please keep in mind that we do not have housing available for males.

Facilities: Campers will stay in our fully-winterized, dormitory-style bunkhouses which includes centrally located restrooms. There is a large fireplace in the Long Branch Lodge which doubles as a dining hall. Our large indoor riding arena and two outdoor riding rings accommodate riders in most weather conditions.

What to Bring: Please bring a sleeping bag (or sheets & blankets), pillow, towels, toilet articles, long pants, shoes/boots with a raised heel for all horse related activities, flashlight, S.E.I. approved riding helmet (we have some if you don’t own one), warm jacket, hat and gloves/mittens.

Adult Chaperons Required - Hoofbeat staff will not be staying in cabins with the campers, therefore, a female troop leader or female adult is required to register with the scouts to provide supervision.

Location: Hoofbeat is located 25 miles west of Madison, high in the beautiful hills of southwestern Wisconsin.

Fee: The $105.00 per person fee includes 2 nights lodging, 3 meals on Saturday, 2 meals on Sunday, bonfire with s’mores and all activities. The cost includes the Horseback Rider Badge and a Certificate of Completion. ($55 for non-riding adults). Full payment is required for each participant to reserve her spot. Space is limited to 36 riders. Non-rider chaperones pay $55. (note: parents are welcome to ride as well.)

Please keep in mind: Hoofbeat Ridge is a smoke-free environment.

To Register: There are a limited number of riding spots available and applications are taken on a first-come, first serve basis. Check on availability by calling the event coordinator. Contact information for the event coordinator and a registration form was sent to all VISTA 2 leaders by email. If you need this again, you may send a request to V2_IntComAmb@gsvista.org. We're sorry, but this information will only be released to registered Girl Scout leaders in VISTA 2 Girl Scouts GCNWI Council.

Registration Deadline: The registration deadline is March 1, 2010. No refunds will be given after April 1, 2010, but replacements are permitted.

Confirmation will be sent to you upon receipt of your check covering the full amount for the event. Additional information will be sent via e-mail (must provide e-mail address) closer to date, which includes a map, tentative schedule and other important information about the weekend.
