Scholarship for 7th Graders planning to attend high school in the United States

The Jack Kent Cook Scholarship application is open for only another month.  Time is moving fast.  There are no second chances for those qualified 7th graders for this scholarship. Those families with 7th graders who are in the 95% or better academically, and who have some financial need should be filling out this application NOW. The foundation’s letter is below

Dear Girl Scout Leaders:

Help us give students the chance to soar.  Please alert your 7th-grade students, parents, and educators that the Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program application period is Now open to receive applications.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program supports hundreds of high-achieving students with financial need across the United States. Young Scholars receive a unique combination of services, which may include:

•    Guidance in selecting a high school and, if necessary, support in applying to a private or magnet high school.
•    Summer academic or enrichment programs.
•    Computers, software, or other learning technology.
•    Connection with a nationwide community of Young Scholars.
•    College advising and counseling.
•    Specialized support in music, art, science, math, or other subjects.

Each year we select up to 75 students from a pool of about 1000 applications.  Selected Young Scholars demonstrate high academic achievement, a motivation to succeed, an interest in the arts or other extracurricular areas, and a commitment to leadership and public service.  Applicants must have demonstrated financial need- typically, a family income below $60,000 .

Young Scholars and their families work closely with a skilled educational adviser beginning in their eighth-grade year throughout high school.  In the words of one Scholar, “My educational adviser has proven that there is a place for me in this bewildered world, and she has gone beyond my wildest dreams to help me get there.”  Most Young Scholars culminate the program with financial support for college from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

Please encourage eligible seventh-grade students to visit our Web site, www.jkcf.org, to learn more about the Young Scholars Program and to download an application.  I am available to answer questions at 847-491-7127 or tammie-stewart@northwestern.edu.  The application deadline is Monday, April 27, 2009.

If you would like to discuss a parent informational meeting concerning the scholarship please contact me to secure dates.

Sincerely,

Tammie Stewart
