Great Service Project!

Our organization delivers chemotherapy caps crafted by volunteers to hospitals, oncology centers, and cancer treatment centers to be provided at no charge to patients.  The chemotherapy caps are knitted, crocheted and/or sewn. They are quite simple to make and would be the perfect project for a beginning crafter - which made us think it might be a great way for a Girl Scout to earn a merit badge.  We could provide the cap patterns, the yarn or cloth and even host lessons to teach the girls how to make them.  Given many of our caps go to kids with cancer, we could even work out an arrangement so the caps the Girl Scouts make go to a local children’s cancer treatment center or camp.  I had many happy years as a Girl Scout and would be excited to work with the organization again.

Thank you for your consideration.

QUICK FACTS
  • Chicagoland Headhuggers provides free chemo caps to cancer patients. Each month we provide more than 300 caps to oncology centers, cancer treatment centers, and hospitals in the Chicagoland region.
  • These caps are donated by volunteers who knit, crochet and sew them. We are always looking for crafters. Click here for more information and cap patterns http://www.chicagolandheadhuggers.org/. Then, click on "want to volunter" to find more information. We use donations to pay for postage and handling to get the caps to the oncology offices, hospitals and cancer centers we serve.
  • Cancer diagnoses continue to grow. 1.4 million people are expected to be diagnosed in the US; 60,000 of these parents, brothers, sisters, and friends will be in our state of Illinois. With those statistics, you likely know someone fighting a battle with Cancer.
