Event Detail

All Scout Nano Event

Saturday, March 8, 2008 - 9 a.m. -1 p.m.

International Institute for Nanotechnology, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL

Sponsored by the Northwestern University Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center and the Cancer Center of Nanotechnology Excellence. This event is open to all Girl Scouts, 8th grade and up. (Boy Scouts and Venturers have also been invited.)

WHAT DOES A NANOTECHNOLOGY SCIENTIST DO?

Nanotechnology has the potential to provide solutions for some of the world’s most pressing concerns. Research under the International Institute for Nanotechnology umbrella addresses our needs for energy and clean water, earlier disease detection and treatment, ensuring our security, and increasing the capability of electronics we use everyday. Institute scientists will give Scouts an introduction to nanotechnology and lead Scouts in hands-on activities using nanomaterials, small group discussions, and lab demos of atomic force and electron scanning & tunneling microscopes, lasers, and chemistry wet labs.  Scouts will present their research posters & enjoy a pizza party & awards ceremony with the scientists.

To reach as many Scouts interested in science as possible we suggest a maximum of 5 Scouts attend per Troop.  And yes, adult leaders can learn much at this fun event too!  Get an up-close view of how exciting discoveries are being made in science at this world-premiere research institute.  Learn about nanotechnology and meet the young (not much older than you!) scientists doing much of the research in this awesome new field that is widely viewed as the most significant technological frontier currently being explored http://www.iinano.org/.

Cost is $10 per person and includes the pizza party and an event patch.  Advance registration is required.  To ask questions or to sign-up for this event, follow the instructions on the attached download.  Shortly after acceptance your troop will receive an info packet with event details and instructions for some fun advance research.  This research will allow you to get more out of your day at Northwestern and can earn you an award!
