International Celebration

February 22: Thinking Day

It is the birthday of Robert, Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scout movement in England, and Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, who continued his work by heading the Girl Guiding movement. On this day, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts make a special effort to exchange greetings with their sisters in other countries, and to give contributions to the Thinking Day Fund. This fund is used to promote the Girl Guide/Girl Scout organizations throughout the world.

Every year on Feb. 22, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world take a moment to think about their sisters in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), the largest international voluntary orga¬nization for girls and young women.

WAGGGS is made up of free countries who participate in the Girl Scouting/Girl Guiding movement. It coordi¬nates activities of the movement and represents members worldwide. WAGGGS is facilitated by almost 1 mil¬lion volunteers.

WAGGGS also provides Girl Scouting in develop¬ing countries and supports four world centers in Switzerland, Mexico, India and England. These centers are destinations for many Girl Scouts who are traveling or participating in international exchanges. The world centers provide activities and training particular to their region as well as promoting international friendship.
