FREMONT/MUNDELEIN COMMUNITY

LEADER BREAKOUT SESSION MINUTES

OCTOBER 10, 2006

1.  Community Business:

  • Day/Overnight Trip Log – In the process of passing around the trip log, someone inadvertently misplaced it and I didn’t get it back. Please look through your papers and return it to me if you find it. Thanks.
  • VISTA cabinet roster. We are still looking to fill a couple of volunteer cabinet positions for our community: Public Relations Partner and Learning Opportunities (training) Partner. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out by volunteering for either of these positions. Carol is looking for a motivator to help with training and distribution of materials.
  • LEAD (Leader Enrichment All Day) was Saturday, October 14 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. I attended to meet with my Community Manager counterparts, and I also saw Lee there. I did learn that one of the other VISTA’s is working with the Schaumberg Flyers baseball team to create a Girl Scout Day this summer. More information to come.
  • VISTA storage locker. Julie is going to have the key and a sign-out sheet for leaders to check-out various items and the Program Boxes. An inventory list and more information to follow.

2.  Community Events:

·        Fall Product Sale is now underway. Thank you to Ann and Cheri for coordinating this and bringing the packets to the VISTA meeting for coordinators to pick up. The training went very smoothly. If you still have not picked up your troop’s packets, please contact Ann.  Important dates can be found on the VISTA 15 Web site.

·        Jazz/Hip Hop Dance Clinic – Money was collected. Please contact Lesley if you still wish to attend. There will be a cap on the number of attendees due to space limitations.

·        Share the Harvest food baskets for Thanksgiving and Winter Outerwear Drive – Lee. Food baskets can be dropped off at the Fremont Township office on Route 60 (keep going past Target and it’s on the left side of the road) on Friday, November 17. Please leave a note with your name, address, troop number and number of girls in your troop. Items should include a foil roasting pan and a gift card for perishable items. You can use the opportunity to have your girls earn a Try-It or Badge by budgeting and shopping for the items.

Clothing for the Winter Outerwear Drive can be dropped off anytime between November 17 and December 15 at the Fremont Township office. They are looking for gently used snowpants, boots, scarves, and coats, both adult and youth sizes. Questions about either of these service projects can be directed to Lee or to Nancy at Fremont Township, 847-223-2847.

Patches will be available for $1.00 per girl.

In addition, Fremont Township sponsors the Holiday Hope program, which is similar to Share the Harvest. Gift baskets can include food, gifts or gift cards.

·        December Community ice skating event – Kim.  Location is Glacier Ice Arena, potential dates are Sat. Dec. 2 or Sun. Dec. 3. Skate sizes will be needed ahead of time to make sure enough are available. The cost will be $6.00 per girl (even if they have their own skates) or $7.00 if we choose to include a couple of instructors. Hot chocolate and cookies are included. Attendees will be limited to registered girl scouts and adult volunteers only.

·        January Community event – Potential dates are Jan. 20 or 21, Jan. 27 or 28, Feb. 3 or 4. These are special Girl Scout days at Wilmot so the price is a dollar less per person.

·        February Friendship Fair – Jill. Date is February 18 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Santa Maria Parish hall. Set up and clean up can be done anytime between noon and 6:00 p.m. The theme this year is “Taste Around the World,” and each troop will host a table representing a different country with food, decorations and other cultural experiences. Sign-up will be available at the next VISTA meeting with countries chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis.

3. Other:

  • Catholic Girl Scout Awards – Carol. A flyer was distributed to interested leaders. Please contact Carol for mere information.
  • Potential service project: Lutheran General is looking for sealed Happy Meal toys to distribute to pediatric outpatient surgery goody bags.
  • The Hawthorn Woods Womens Club has opportunities for community service this holiday season. Their charities support women and children’s shelters in Lake County. They are looking for people who would be interested in either 1) buying gifts for individuals or families or 2) donating items for a holiday “store” for the women and children to do their holiday shopping or 3) the Gift Shoebox project, where troop members can each decorate a shoebox with $5-10 worth of gifts for a child in the shelter. If interested contact Laura.
  • I apologize for not including this in the September minutes. Troops can earn their Drama Badge by participating in a one-hour drama workshop with Drama Kids. Contact them at 847-546-8095.
  • Red Ribbon Week begins next week. Decoration Day is this Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interested troops can show up at the police department any time. Pizza will be served at approximately 11:15 a.m. Take Down day is Sat. Oct. 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pizza will also be served that day. For questions contact Officer Jones at 968-4600.
