HAWTHORN VISTA 15 - EARTH DAY EVENT

Equestrian Connection

Sunday, May 20, 2007

ABOUT OUR DAY:

Equestrian Connection is a non-for-profit organization that provides therapeutic riding programs to individuals with special needs.  They recently acquired 25+ acres that they need help cleaning up.

We’ll be clearing and removing branches from a thorny brush trail, dragging wood posts for a new fence, scrapping/painting/staining two dumpsters, stacking rocks, moving bails of hay, planting flowers and planting one or two trees.  We definitely have our work cut out for us… and, there will be something for every Girl Scout level – especially older troops!

We can use all the hands we can get…especially Moms and Dads who can help clear-out the trail, and help with troop supervision.  If you have a parent who is willing to stay (and they are not registered with Girl Scouts) let us know on your registration form, so we can purchase insurance for them from the HUB.  We will also have a Waiver Form from the  Equestrian Connection for you to fill out for each girl.

Please return all forms (registration, waivers, and non-registered adults) to Janine Johnston by Friday May 4th.  Any questions can be directed to Janine Johnston or Donna Callen.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:

(Jeans, old clothing, boots, protective eye goggles, heavy working/gardening gloves)

No Girl Scout uniforms!!!

We want everyone to wear a pair of jeans and OLD clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, muddy or paint on.  You’ll want to have your arms and legs covered (even if it’s a  warm day).  You’ll also want to wear boots that will keep your feet dry.  It might be muddy if we continue to get rain, and where there’s water…there’s mud!

We’re trying to get heavy working/gardening gloves donated from Home Depot and/or Menards.  Each girl must have a pair of gloves to help work that day.  We should know by the May Leader Meeting if we’ll have the gloves, or if you’ll need to buy/bring them.

Once we have our work assignments established, we will notify each troop as to which items they’ll need to bring with them to help with their jobs (i.e., paint brushes, rakes and trimming sheers-if clearing the trail)

DIRECTIONS: (From Townline Elementary) – about 4.1 miles

Take Hwy 60 East toward Lake Forest.  Turn left on Riverwoods Blvd.  Follow River woods Blvd. around to N. Bradley Road.  Turn right on Bradley Road.  Equestrian Connection is about ½ mile on the left – look for a small sign.  There is a subdivision on the right.  If the parking area at Equestrian Connection is full, you can park in the subdivision across the street.  Please do not block anyone’s mailbox.
