Lakeside Cemetery Service Project
Saturday, May 23, 2009
9am – 10am
Each year on the Saturday before Memorial Day, the local Scouts assist the American Legion members by placing flags at the gravesites of known Veterans buried within Lakeside Cemetery. This year, we have the privilege of continuing this tradition.
At 9:00am, we will gather at the Veterans Memorial within Lakeside Cemetery for a short program before we divide into groups for the flag placement. Area Leaders will guide each group to a specific area within the cemetery with flags and locations of Veterans’ gravesites. The Scouting group must have: an adult representative to make sure each Scout has had at least one chance to place a flag; and additional adults/parents to make sure all are maintaining cemetery etiquette (below). Once flags are placed, Scouts and adults/parents are dismissed.
Please direct all inquiries to Judy Zemeske
Each unit: rd. Unit number_____________________ Approx. # of Scouts (siblings 5yrs & up may participate)_______________Contact Name:_________________________________________________________ Phone Number(s):_____________________________________________________ E-mail:______________________________________________________________ Try to keep off of the grass as much as possible. If you need to walk on the grass, walk between gravesites and not directly on them. Do not sit or stand on any of the grave markers Some are very old and very fragile and may break – we don’t want anyone to get hurt or have anything get damaged. Others look much sturdier, but cemetery maintenance usually works very hard to keep the headstones level, and any extra weight may cause some shifting. Respect other visitors No shouting No running No throwing Do not move or remove anything Many people place small items at their loved ones’ graves in remembrance. These need to stay right where they were placed. Do not pick any flowers, leaves or plants. Please avoid eating and drinking while in a cemetery Please discard wrappers, empty cans and any item that is obviously trash.
