Notes from North Region Manager's Meeting

Volunteer Trainers
During the past few weeks, volunteer trainers have had the opportunity to meet and interact with trainers from across the council.  More than 100 volunteer trainers have attended either the trainer gathering, one of the trainer updates, or one of the trainer roundtables. In addition, the adult development managers have updated many SUVA managers, SUVA consultants, and staff in delivering New Volunteer Orientation.

While we currently have approximately 250 names on our council trainer roster, the adult development managers are actively recruiting more adults to serve as council trainers/facilitators.  Council trainers/facilitators are responsible for delivering council trainings to our new and returning volunteers. Facilitating Adult Learning, a training course for volunteers who are interested in becoming part of the council training team, is scheduled for November/December in the north, central, and south regions.  Interested volunteers are to call Debbie Nawara, Director of Adult Development and Training Innovation, at 630-544-5975.

Adult Recognition System
We are in the process of assessing the council adult recognition system and developing a recognition plan for the FY2010.  Several volunteer focus groups are scheduled in each region during October; a zoomerang survey canvassing adult volunteers about adult recognition is being developed.

E-newsletter
Approximately 16,792 people are registered to receive our council e-newsletter, “Connect: The Power of One,” and we’d love to grow that number as we strive to use resources wisely by increasing our means of electronic communication with people.  If you haven’t done so already, sign-up for online receipt of the council newsletter by clicking here.

Program Resource Guide
Our Program Resource Guide went live on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org.  Registration opened September 15th.  As of Monday, September 22, there are almost 1,000 girls registered for events!  Hard copies of the Program Resource Guide have been mailed; one per registered household. Please help spread the word that we have officially launched the registration process for all volunteers, parents, and girls who would like to participate in our events, activities, and workshops.

Girl Scouting through Multiple Pathways
Encourage girls to participate in Girl Scouts through multiple pathways!  There are many workshops/events available for girls listed on the website that are not printed in the Girl Scout Resource Guide.  These workshops/events are located within the online registration system.  Go here to search by age, topic, or date for a wide variety of specialty workshops.  Check back often for new offerings and new locations.

Evaluation, Assessment, and Research
There is a new resource from GSUSA - Transforming Leadership, Continued.  The first report detailed the 15 Leadership Outcomes while the second one details the Girl Scout Processes (girl led, cooperative learning, hands-on) and the strategies to make them happen.  Like the first book, it breaks the Girl Scout Processes down by level.  This is a good resource for anyone working with girls. Both resources are free to download on the GSUSA site.
GSUSA also released a piece on training adults to implement Take Action projects with girls.  If you are interested in understanding more about how to Take Action with girls, access the GSUSA site.

Girl Scout Center for Leadership and Innovation
We are looking for volunteers to help with the installation of workstations for the environmental experience on the 5th floor.  We are working with a team of experts – the Prairie Godmothers – to develop and build a greenhouse, vermicompost, hydro garden, and a living, regional animal environment that teaches girls valuable lessons in sustainability.

Fall Product Program
Order-taking ends October 18.  Payment is collected at the time of the order.  Girl orders will not be entered into the system without full payment.  SUVA’s will notify troop managers of their delivery site location and have them sign up for a delivery time.

Cookie Rally 2010
This is our very first council-wide Girl Scout Cookie rally.  The Chicago Wolves are excited to be working with us to plan a spectacular event for 10,000 girls, their families, and/or troops.  The day will be filled with Girl Scout Cookie program activities, photo opportunities with Tony the Tiger, Ernie the Elf, and Skates, the Wolves mascot.  After the rally, girls are invited to have fun in the arena participating in games and activities sponsored by the Wolves or they can go to the Family Fun Fest held in the Skyline Room.  Discounted food vouchers will be available for purchase ($4), which will cover the cost of a soda and a hot dog (savings of $4). Girls will participate in the opening flag ceremony, and, of course, we will be there to cheer on the Chicago Wolves to victory!
