17th Annual Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth

The Covenant House is holding the 17th annual Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth on November 15, 2007. Every year thousands of people come together carrying hand-painted banners and candles, singing songs of hope, and reading poetry and testimonials from young survivors of the street.

Girl Scouts can join this effort by participating in the Candlelight Vigil and supporting homeless young people in the following ways:

1.       Join a Candlelight Vigil in your area. You can support someone who is hosting a Vigil in your town or city, by visiting the Convenant House Web site at http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org.

2.       Host or sponsor a Candlelight Vigil in your home, community, school, congregation, or company. For more information, visit http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org or contact Dorothy at Convenant House at 1-800- 388-3888.

3.       Take part in the Virtual Candlelight Vigil. Go to http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org and light a virtual candle to support the fight against youth homelessness.

In 1990, Covenant House held the first Candlelight Vigil for Homeless Youth. Since then, the event has become a powerful voice of hope for homeless youth. People gather together with family and friends in cities across the Americas to give their support and to raise awareness of the millions of young people living alone on the streets.

This annual event coincides with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 12-18). In addition to raising awareness, this event also raises funds for Covenant House programs, including crisis care, community outreach, NINELINE youth crisis hotline and others. Through the generous support of sponsors and individual donors, these programs provide vital services such as shelter, counseling, transitional living, health services and educational/vocational training to homeless youth under 21 years of age.

Visit http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org to find out more or to start a Vigil in your community or council. The Covenant House is located at 5 PENN PLAZA, NEW YORK, NY 10001, (212) 727-4099.
