Become a Girl Scout
Girl Scouting: For Girls, Only Girls
Are you a girl who’s interested in learning a sport, sampling the arts, preparing for a career, or pitching a tent? In Girl Scouting, you can do it all in a safe environment! It’s never too late to join the fun.
Any girl in grades K-12 may become a member of the Girl Scouts. She must accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Although all girls are known as Girl Scouts, there are actually six grade-specific program levels: Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. In an effort to reach every girl, Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana program is delivered in six unique ways:
Cost of Membership
- Girl Scouting is meant to be a low cost program where girls earn their own way. Parents are asked to make a contribution to the council through Family Partnership.
- Membership in Girl Scouting costs $12 per year. That money goes to Girl Scouts of the USA for program development, insurance, and other services provided by the national organization. Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana has financial assistance available for girls who need help to defray the cost of membership.
- Girls in troops set weekly or monthly dues.
- Girl Scout handbooks are highly recommended. Girl Scout financial assistance, if approved, can be made available for a handbook.
- Girl Scout uniforms are recommended, but not mandatory. Financial assistance, if approved, is available for a Girl Scout tunic, sash, vest, membership pin, ID strips, group numerals, Junior badge, and Cadette/Senior/Ambassador interest books.
- Each family may support the Girl Scout troop by donating refreshments for a meeting.
- Generally, additional costs cover individual or Girl Scout troop field trips, special events, and overnights. Girl Scout troops can finance these activities through budgeting their product program activity money or by running additional council-approved money-earning activities.
- destinations events sponsored by Girl Scouts of the USA for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors have fees for program, site, travel, and accommodations. Airfare to these events is additional. National and local scholarships are available.

Discuss cyberspace safety with your daughter or other girls. You may wish to have the girls complete the Cyberspace Safety Pledge.
* The Girl Scouts’ primary concern is always the health and safety of the girls we serve. While the Internet is a powerful information resource for girls, we realize that the web is a wide-open medium that can attract more than our intended audience. To ensure that girls are safe when conducting activities on the Internet, Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and Girl Scouts of the USA has established policies, standards, and guidelines for both councils and girls.
